HAGERSTOWN -- The Hagerstown Police Department on Thursday released the identity of a body found Saturday night in a Mitchell Avenue home.

Carol Marie Brown, 22, lived at the 457 Mitchell Ave. home where her body was found. A single mother, she often was known as Carol Maphis, a family member said.

Brown's death has been ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Sgt. Paul Kifer of the Hagerstown Police Department said Thursday.

Brown's body was found by a family member Saturday about 8:30 p.m., Kifer said. Her body probably was in the home for several hours before it was found, he said.

Police were not releasing the method or cause of death, Kifer said.

No one has been charged in connection with Brown's death, and police have not identified any suspects, Kifer said.

Investigators are interested in talking to anyone who recently has been friends with Brown, Kifer said.

Brown's children -- a 2-year-old boy and a 7-month-old girl -- had been staying with other family members.

"It was a shock for the family member that found her, a shock to the whole family going through this," said Penny Maphis, Brown's cousin by marriage.

Brown's children are in the care of family members.

"All of us are there for them," Penny Maphis said.

Family members last saw Brown Friday, she said.

"The last any of the family saw her, she was happy and smiling and planning their future," Penny Maphis said. "She was a beautiful girl and had a beautiful heart."

Brown had been married briefly in the past.

Brown was a member of Crossroads Church, according to an obituary in Wednesday's edition of The Herald-Mail.

Funeral services will be today at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home at 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Keedysville.

"The family would really like to stress that she was a beautiful person and didn't deserve to die," Maphis said.

Anyone with information on Brown's death may call the Hagerstown Police Department at 301-790-3700.
