Clarification

April 24, 2008

A statement attributed to Mary Towe, vice president and chief nursing officer at Washington County Hospital, in a story on page A3 of Sunday's Herald-Mail was misleading.

Towe intended to convey that during previous nursing shortages, when there was an economic downturn, nurses re-entered the work force. In the future, as the average age of nurses increases, there will be fewer nurses who will be able to return to direct patient care, she said.

The Herald-Mail apologizes for the mistake.
