Bar allowed to host outdoor events

Washington County liquor officials on Wednesday gave representatives of Cancun Cantina on the Dual Highway in Hagerstown permission to hold outdoor events on the property this summer.

Charles Mades, treasurer of the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County, said the events would be along the lines of car and motorcycle shows.

After the permission was granted, Robert L. Everhart, board chairman, told Jennifer Hare, a representative of Cancun Cantina, that he had received complaints of customers consuming too much alcohol at the business.

"We would advise you to be more careful. ... It is happening. We know it's happening," he said.

Hare said Cancun Cantina would address the problem.

Representatives from the Plaza Hotel in Halfway asked county liquor officials to waive a $400 late fee that the business incurred by failing to renew its liquor license on time.

Ron Bowers, whose name is on the Plaza's liquor license, told the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County that the business innocently misplaced the renewal papers.

"After 23 years, (I've) never had an infraction," Bowers said.

Robert L. Everhart, liquor board chairman, said a decision would be made within the week.
