Around Funkstown

Spring showers

Spring has sprung and April sure is living up to its motto of spring showers.

No complaints from me. My lilacs are ready to burst into full bloom and I could not be happier!

Come July and August, the lush green of the lawn will be replaced with a not so desirable shade of brown, so we should not grumble, but instead be thankful.

Have you started your spring yard cleanup yet? Don't forget that yard waste is picked up on Tuesdays. Remember to use biodegradable bags or simply put your yard waste into garbage cans for a more environment friendly disposal.

For larger spring cleanup that might include that basement that somehow got cluttered again, mark your calendar for Friday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Read your town newsletter for the dos and don'ts of what can be disposed of and know that you will need proof of Funkstown residency to utilize this service.

Funkstown War Memorial update

So much thanks to all those who made the restoration of the Funkstown War Memorial come to fruition.

The World War II, Korean and Vietnam Memorial was in desperate need of a refacing and through the generous donation of time and money, completion is nearing.

May 30 is the date set, and with a few more dollars needed, it looks like it will happen.

If you would like to donate, any amount would be appreciated. Please head down to Town Hall and let them know!

Students to visit Renfrew Museum

Keep your fingers crossed for some pleasant weather Wednesday as Mrs. Beere and Mrs. Vinci's classes will be heading to Renfrew Museum in Waynesboro, Pa., for a field trip.

I am certain that they will have a most lovely time!

Also, make plans accordingly as there is a 2 1/2-hour early dismissal on Friday - just in time to help with some of that spring cleanup and yard work.

Fill the morning with a story or two at Funkstown School for Early Childhood Education. The toddler story time is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and is certain to be fun!

Town picnic set for June 1

A quick reminder about my favorite "Mayberry Event" in the whole wide world. The town picnic is slated for Sunday, June 1, at 1 p.m.

I won't go into a tremendous amount of detail other than to say save that day for fun and games and excellent food prepared by your neighbors.

Volunteers are desperately needed to help with the planning and setting up. Please let Brenda and Kelly at Town Hall know that you will be there to lend a helping hand so that they won't have to do it all by themselves!

Thanks for sharing part of your day with me. I look forward to our little visit next week. I will bring the coffee ... you just sit and relax!
