FREDERICK, Md. - Firefighters from around the region were called in to assist in putting out two brush fires reported within minutes of each other Saturday afternoon in Frederick County, according to a county 911 dispatcher.
One fire off Friends Creek Road in the Emmitsburg, Md., area was reported at 1:43 p.m., and the second about 10 miles south off Mountaindale Road near Lewistown, Md., was called in two minutes later, the dispatcher said. Firefighters still were on the scene five hours later, the dispatcher said.
"They'll be up there a couple of hours yet," a member of the Vigilant Hose Co. in Emmitsburg said at 7:15 p.m. The fire was contained, but firefighters were searching out hotspots, he said.
Both fires were in mountainous areas, the dispatcher said.
Firefighters from Adams and Franklin counties in Pennsylvania were called in to assist at the Friends Creek Road fire, along with units from Frederick, Carroll and Washington counties in Maryland, he said. A dozen or more fire companies also were assisting at the Lewistown fire, he said.
