Franklin County clears way for bridge replacements

April 18, 2008|By DON AINES

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Franklin County Board of County Commissioners on Thursday passed an ordinance to clear the way for a bridge replacement project on Twin Bridge Road with St. Thomas and Hamilton townships.

The project will replace two bridges, one of them a single lane span, on the road, said County Chief Administrator John Hart. The county has budgeted $513,730 to replace one bridge and $430,225 for the other, Hart said.

The county will replace bridges 26 and 27, two of the more than 90 bridges the county is responsible for maintaining, Hart said. The townships will be responsible for realigning the road, building the approaches and installing guardrails, he said.

Hart said the bidding process will take 30 to 45 days, but could not say when construction will begin or be completed. The schedule will be flexible to accommodate access to the Twin Bridge Campground as much as possible, he said.

Hamilton and St. Thomas townships already passed ordinances for the project, Hart said. The county commissioners scheduled approval of an intergovernmental agreement on the project for next Tuesday.
