Man finds carcasses of more than 70 animals near Point of Rocks

April 17, 2008

POINT OF ROCKS, Md. (AP) -- Frederick County animal control officials say a man looking for mushrooms and a place to hunt in a wooded area near Point of Rocks found the bodies of dozens of dogs and a few cats.

The man found more than 70 animal carcasses about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday off Rock Hall Road near Md. 28.

Frederick County Animal Control Division Director Harold Domer says it's not clear yet whether the 70 to 72 dogs and two or three cats had been euthanized.

Investigators believe the bodies could have been placed in the area for about two months and might have accumulated over a period of time.

Domer says animal control officers are investigating with the state Animal Health Diagnostic Lab in Frederick.
