Civil War course to be offered

Hagerstown Community College's College for Kids program is offering a Civil War history course specially geared toward children entering grades six through eight through the use of interactive, hands-on learning and projects.

This one-week summer enrichment program will show children what it was like to live as a solider during the Civil War.

Students will "enlist" and learn about Civil War drills, and will tour Antietam National Battlefield and Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

The Civil War history course will be taught by HCC instructor Jeff Driscoll, an independent tour guide and lecturer who specializes in Civil War and World War II history, and teaches a variety of courses at the college.

Class starts Monday, Aug. 4, and runs through Friday, Aug. 8. The course costs $154. For more information or to register, call 301-790-2800, ext. 236.

HCC to hold spring student art exhibit

Hagerstown Community College will host its annual spring student art exhibit from Monday, April 28 through Friday, May 2, in the lobby of Kepler Theater on HCC's campus.

The Spring Student Art Exhibit will feature approximately 80 students exhibiting a host of artwork, including painting, drawing, mixed media sculpture, ceramic sculpture, pottery, digital photography and graphic design prints.

To be eligible to enter the show, students must be enrolled in one of HCC's art courses, and must also have a coherent body of work to present.

The opening reception will be held on Monday, April 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This event is free and the public is invited to attend. In addition, the art exhibit will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 2.

HCC to host annual faculty art show

Hagerstown Community College will host its annual faculty art show from Monday, April 21 through Saturday, April 26, in the lobby of the Kepler Theater on HCC's campus.

The faculty art show will feature 17 faculty artists exhibiting a host of work that includes ceramics, painting, jewelry, drawing, video, prints and sculpture.

The opening reception will be Monday at 6 p.m. This event is free and is open to the public. In addition, the art exhibit will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 26.

Kreykenbohm lecture series continues

Hagerstown Community College will hold its annual Kreykenbohm lecture series Monday at 7 p.m., in HCC's Kepler Theater.

The lecture series is named after Helen Kreykenbohm, a retired professor and former humanities division chair at HCC. This year's lecture will feature a retrospective of past lectures in honor of the 20th anniversary of Kreykenbohm's retirement.

Askold Skalsky, an English and humanities professor at HCC, will also be honored at this year's lecture. This semester, Skalsky retires after 40 years of teaching at HCC.

The lecture coincides with HCC's annual faculty art show. A reception for faculty artists will be held at 6 p.m. before the lecture. Both events are free and are open to the public. For more information, call 301-790-2800, ext. 262.
