BOONSBORO - Doug Stauffer and his family have acquired Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro.

The Stauffers, who operate five funeral homes in Frederick County, Md., are longtime friends of the Basts.

Doug Stauffer, a Walkersville, Md., native, said he served his apprenticeship under John Bast Sr. and John Bast Jr. in the early 1970s.

Stauffer then returned to Frederick County to own his own funeral home.

Stauffer said his purchase of Bast Funeral Home will become final Thursday. The new name will be Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, P.A.

Current employees, including Paul Dean and Kelly Zimmerman, will continue to work there.

Aside from memorial DVDs and candles that will be made available, "nothing's going to change," Stauffer said Tuesday.

The Bast Funeral Home Web site says the business dates to 1837, when Captain John Christian Brining opened a cabinet shop.

Doug Bast said his grandfather, William F. Bast, went to work there in the late 19th century and bought the business around 1908.
