Suns' rally falls short vs. Captains

April 14, 2008

The Lake County Captains scored six runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-2 lead, then held on to beat the Hagerstown Suns 9-7 Sunday at Municipal Stadium.

The Captains (6-4) sent 10 hitters to the plate in the seventh against Suns relievers Atahualpa Severino and Erik Arnesen.

Severino gave up a bunt single and walked two to load the bases, then surrendered a one-out, two-run double to Roman Pena to give Lake County a 5-2 lead.

After Severino struck out Karexon Sanchez, Arenesen came on to get the final out of the inning, but that didn't come until the Captains strung together four straight RBI singles to extend the lead to 9-2.

Hagerstown's Steven Souza hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 9-3.

In the eighth, Lake County reliever Garrison Campfield walked the bases loaded, then was victimized when Pena misplayed a sacrifice fly which allowed two runs to score.

Vinnie Pestano relieved Campfield and gave up RBI singles to Stephen Englund and Trevor Lawhorn before getting Souza to ground into a double play to end the threat.

The Suns hit into four inning-ending double plays in the game, including one in the bottom of the ninth.
