Boonsboro Middle, Pleasant Valley clubs compete in chess event

Chess clubs from Pleasant Valley Elementary School and Boonsboro Middle School competed April 5 in the first Maryland Chess Association W. Paul Engle Jr. Open tournament at Boonsboro Middle School.

About 92 students and adults registered for the tournament, said Mike DiLeo, who organized the event.

Pleasant Valley Elementary's team placed first in the novice section, with the following individual results:

Novice section: Aaron George placed third and Sierra Smith-DiLeo placed sixth and was the "Top Under-500-Rated player." Tied for 10th place were Ricky Guthrie, Logan Roberts and Elijah Ratliff. Jimmy McKenzie tied for 23rd place.

Reserve section: Dominic Smith-DiLeo placed 10th with a 3-1 record.

Scholastic nonrated: Christian Brown won first place with 3.5 points out of a possible 4.0. Matthew Frushour placed third; Wyatt Stitley placed ninth; Paul Rochford, 10th; and Jesse Homan, 11th.

Three players from Sharpsburg Elementary competed in the Scholastic nonrated section - Ethan Connelly placed second, Dakota Pfeiffer placed sixth and Alex Leadingham tied for 11th place.


Boonsboro Middle School finished third as a team, with the following individual results:

Justin Henney placed 14th and Bronson King, Nicholas Dougherty, David George and Vincent Smith-DiLeo tied for 21st place.

The team included Mark Leadingham, Bryce King, Randy Kines, Jared Brown and Orin Kuehl.

In the open nonrated section, Mike DiLeo tied for third and Brian Stottlemyer, faculty adviser for the Boonsboro Middle School Chess Club, tied for fifth.
