Happy birthday to our son, Chris Rowland, who lives in California. He will celebrate his 34th birthday on April 17.

Security 1st group plans area cleanup

Security 1st Neighborhoods 1st group will be holding its third annual spring cleanup today and Tuesday.

The group will have a dump truck parked at the entrance of Washington Gardens for individuals who live in the boundaries of the Neighborhoods 1st group.

The boundaries stretch from Eastern Boulevard to Pangborn Boulevard along Security Road.

Any individuals who would like to place items in the dump truck must show identification that they are a resident of the area.


For the last two years, the group has held its event during the week of the City of Hagerstown's citywide spring cleanup event.

In addition, please remember that propane tanks, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, tires, paints, chemicals, gasoline, diesel, bio-hazards, car/truck batteries and other hazardous waste will not be accepted.

Quarter horse youth group plans shows

The Maryland State Quarter Horse Youth Association is sponsoring two all- breed preseason schooling shows.

The shows will be April 26 and May 10 at Silver Star Saddle Club in Greencastle, Pa.

The shows start at 9 a.m. The rain date is Saturday, May 31, at 9 a.m.

Kim Hiett, a student at North Hagerstown High School and Hagerstown Community College, is show chairperson. She can be reached at 301-797-1021.

All levels of riding are welcomed. Negative coggins required. Registration papers not required.

Prizes will be awarded to fourth place. Door prizes will be given out throughout the day and there will be a 50/50 jackpot awarded.

Longaberger basket bingo set for Sunday

A Longaberger basket bingo will be Sunday at St. Joseph Church, 17630 Virginia Ave. in Hagerstown.

Doors open at 1 p.m. and bingo starts at 1:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. There will be tip jars and special bingo games. All baskets will be filled.

Proceeds will benefit the Catholic Daughters' work for the church and community.

Mark your calendar and plan to join St. Maria Goretti High School for its next open house on Thursday, April 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Spring Sports Night will be Monday, April 28, at Municipal Stadium at 6:45 p.m. The Gaels will host McConnellsburg and will honor the senior athletes.

North High Band travels to Florida

The North Hagerstown High School Hub Band recently traveled to Walt Disney World in Florida where it marched in the parade through the Magic Kingdom and performed in the Epcot Center.

Three days after its return, the band performed in the county's Large Ensemble Festival and scored a "1" rating, which means they are now headed to the state level to be judged.

The Jazz Band will perform in the Blue Ridge Jazz Festival at Smithsburg High School on April 25. The Concert Band, Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble will compete in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival on May 2.

Associated Builders and Contractors

The General Contractors Showcase will be April 17 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Four Points on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

Tickets cost $30 with two business cards; dinner and drink included.

The event is open to the public. This event will feature general contractors showcasing their businesses.

TOPS Chapter 446

The TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 had a net loss again at the April 9 meeting.

The group welcomed a visitor, Joe. Also, the chapter is happy to have Janet, Carol and Betty Jo join the group.

The group plans to continue with the Intuitive Eating program at Wednesday's meeting. The group welcomes all visitors.

TOPS Chapter 77

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 77 had its installation of officers for 2008.

They are as follows: leader, Donna Blackowitz; co-leader, Patsy Price; secretary, Cindy Ryder; treasurer, Madalyn Keller; and weight recorders, Mary Lou Edmands and Mary Lynne Herald.

Eileene Mason was crowned the chapter queen for 2007 and Louise Horst was the runner-up. Each of these ladies received one dozen roses, a charm and certificate.
