Washington Co. softball league postpones opening day ceremonies

April 14, 2008|By DAN DEARTH

WILLIAMSPORT - Friday's heavy rains turned local softball diamonds into fields of streams, prompting officials from the Washington County Girls Softball League to cancel opening day ceremonies Saturday morning at the Kemps Mill Softball Complex.

Steve Danfelt, president of the league, said he made the decision Friday night after the second of two storms hit the area. The league has rescheduled the event for 9 a.m. next Saturday, he said.

"If there was any way we could play ball, we would," said Danfelt, who spent most of Friday preparing the fields for play. "You can't do anything about Mother Nature."

Although the opening ceremony has been moved back a week, the regular season is to begin Monday at 6 p.m. for elementary- and middle-school girls, Danfelt said. High school girls won't start play until June.

Charlie Chaney, who has coached in the league for 12 years, said his daughters, Katlyne Steele, 13, and Steffanie Chaney, 14, play in the league. They were disappointed that the beginning of the season will have to wait, he said.

Having received word about the postponement Friday night, none of the girls were at the field Saturday morning. Only Danfelt, Chaney and a few other league officials were there to check the condition of the three fields.

Chaney said about 1,500 people participate in the opening day ceremony each year.

"Even the grandparents are disappointed," Chaney said. "You're going to see a lot of disappointed people today. Everybody looks forward to it."
