Washington County man pleads guilty in sex abuse case

April 11, 2008

A man who faced a second-degree rape charge pleaded guilty Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court to one count of third-degree sex abuse.

Bryan Keith Minnick, 36, must by law register as a child sex offender. He made suggestive comments to an 11-year-old girl, reached his hand down the girl's pants and touched her buttocks, Assistant State's Attorney Gina Cirincion said Thursday in court.

Minnick was sentenced to five years in prison, with credit for 188 days he already served, and the rest of the time was suspended, Washington County Circuit Judge M. Kenneth Long Jr. ordered.

"It's absolutely ridiculous you would do this to an 11-year-old child," Long told Minnick.

Minnick's sentence was agreed to by the state and defense as part of the plea deal.

The rape charge against Minnick was dropped. The state would have difficulty prosecuting the rape because the victim was made unavailable to prosecutors by her mother, Cirincion said.
