Shepherd University board OKs tuition hikes for next year

April 11, 2008

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd University Board of Governors Thursday approved the 2008-09 tuition and fees at a special meeting.

Pending final approval from the Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC), tuition and fees for in-state residents will increase by $167 per semester, from $2,282 to $2,449, according to a Shepherd news release.

Tuition and fees for out-of-state residents will increase by $388 per semester, from $6,018 to $6,406, the release states.

Also approved were increases in graduate tuition and fees. Graduate rates will increase from $259 to $281 per hour for in-state students and from $374 to $402 per hour for out-of-state students.

The tuition and fee increases will augment a $309,586 increase in state appropriations designated for pay increases.

The application fee will increase from $35 to $45 with the additional revenues being used for improvements to the application process mandated by the federal government and HEPC.

The new funding will offset rising fuel, technology, and utility increases, provide operating funds for the new Wellness Center, and provide funding for additional positions in student services, including counseling and advisement/retention initiatives, according to the release.

Shepherd hopes to provide faculty and staff pay increases of approximately 4 percent in the fall, budget permitting.
