St. Maria Goretti High School has named Chad Brashears as its new head basketball coach, replacing longtime coach Cokey Robertson.
Brashears was in his third year as the freshman basketball coach, said the school's president, William B. McKinley.
He said Brashears will take over "pretty much immediately."
Brashears, a 2000 graduate of Goretti, played guard on the basketball team, earning All-Washington County Private School first-team honors. He then played collegiately at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., scoring 723 points and 176 assists in a career that ended in 2004. He later played on a USA Athletes International team that won the championship at the Bajan Unifest Games in Barbados.
McKinley said Brashears was named by a search committee, which looked for a replacement coach for several weeks before recommending Brashears to McKinley for approval.
Robertson retired in March after compiling a 698-449 record in 34 years with the Gaels. He won 780 games and lost 506 in a coaching career that began in 1960.
