Hagerstown Community College president recovering from heart bypass surgery

April 09, 2008

HAGERSTOWN -- Hagerstown Community College President Guy Altieri underwent heart bypass surgery Friday at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, a college spokeswoman said.

The surgery went well and Altieri expects to resume a normal work schedule within a few weeks, said Elizabeth K. Stull, director of public information for the college.

The need for the surgery was determined during a routine physical examination, Stull said.

Altieri is recovering in the hospital and anticipates being discharged later this week, Stull said Tuesday. He is looking forward to participating in the May honors convocation and graduation ceremony, she said.

During Altieri's absence, Anna Barker, vice president of administration and finance, is assuming presidential duties, Stull said.

Altieri became the college's third president in 2002. Formerly, he served as chief operating officer and executive vice president at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Mich.
