Local bands are often hard to discover.

But sometimes, these low-key musicians have wonderfully original ideas and compositions.

Battle of the Bands, a competition of local musical groups, is a great way to hear fresh music from teens in Washington County.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, several bands will come together at North Hagerstown High School and perform songs of their choosing.

This year, according to David Burkey, sophomore class president and organizer of the event, the audience will get to cast votes in order to decide which band wins.

"We're excited about the new format," he said. "It's like our very own reality show."

Battle of the Bands is a great opportunity for young people to be heard.

"So many of the young artists don't get a chance to play for people. This is an outlet for them to perform and maybe get some county recognition," said Burkey.

Admission is $5, and will go to supporting the NHHS sophomore class. Bands must register by Wednesday, April 9.
