Frederick County school board seeks student member

April 08, 2008

FREDERICK, Md. - High school sophomores and juniors who attend Frederick County public schools may apply to serve as the 2008-09 student member of the Board of Education. The nomination deadline is Friday, April 18, for the term beginning in July 2008.

The role of the student member is to bring a student viewpoint on educational issues to BOE meetings, generally held two evenings per month. The function is not to represent any particular special-interest group of students on an issue but rather to respect the diversity of students' points of view, to improve communication between the student body, staff and BOE members and to inform students of policies and decisions executed by the BOE.

Interested sophomores and juniors should contact their high school principal or student government advisor for a nomination packet. Students may also access the application packet at www.fcpsteach.org. In addition, principals and student government advisors may nominate a student. Completed applications are due by 4 p.m. April 18 to FCPS Social Studies Curriculum Specialist Michael Bunitsky, 7630 Hayward Road, Frederick, MD 21702.

The application process includes a 500-word essay identifying the most pressing issue or concern of the applicants' peers along with a proposed solution. Applicants are asked to explain how they would discern the attitude of their peers in other high schools and adequately represent the county's diverse population as the BOE representative of all students.

A selection panel - including the current student member to the BOE, the Frederick County Association of Student Councils executive board and advisor, a middle school student government president and advisor, a high school student government president and advisor, and a high school principal - will interview finalists on Thursday, April 24. The panel will forward the names of five finalists to the FCASC General Assembly to stand for election April 29.
