Jonathan Street roadwork begins Tuesday morning

April 07, 2008

Work crews from Northern Pipeline Co. will begin installing new gas mains and service lines at 7 a.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of Jonathan Street between Church and Bethel streets.

The work is part of the first phase of the Jonathan Street Reconstruction Project.

The work primarily will take place on the east, or right, side of the street, with the new gas main being installed in the street near the curb or under the sidewalk.

On-street parking will not be allowed in the 200 block of Jonathan Street to provide space for the contractor's excavation and equipment. However, an open through-lane will be maintained for vehicles along the west side of the street.

Motorists approaching the work zone will encounter warning signs, cones, barricades and other traffic-control devices. As with any construction work zone, motorists are advised to drive slowly and remain alert to the movements of the construction workers and their equipment.

The city anticipates the gas main work in the 200 block of Jonathan Street will last about three weeks. At that time, the work will move to the 300 block of the street, and the 200 block likely will be closed to all traffic as the next phase of the construction project begins.

The city will issue additional advisories before any changes are made in traffic patterns along the Jonathan Street corridor.

Emergency vehicles will be able to pass through the work zone while the gas mains are being installed in the 200 block of Jonathan Street.
