Hawks split doubleheader

ARNOLD, Md. -- Roland Thiele hit the game-winning home run in the top of the seventh to lift Hagerstown Community College to an 8-7 win over Anne Arundel in the nightcap of a Maryland JuCo doubleheader split.

The homer was Thiele's fifth this season and he finished with two hits and four RBI.

Matt Greene, Alex Stover, Jason Gordner and Zach Smith had two hits apiece for the Hawks.

In the first game, Anne Arundel scored three runs in the seventh to force extra innings, then scored in the 10th for a 9-8 win.

David Zaminski and Thiele each had two hits and Stover had a two-run double and three RBI to lead Hagerstown (17-9-1, 8-1).


Rams split twinbill

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University received hitting and pitching in a 10-0 win over Fairmont State to salvage a split.

Hedgesville graduate Dirk Webb collected three hits and drove in three runs in the nightcap while Brett Caplan had a pair of hits including a three-run home run.

Shepherd (15-14) dropped the opener, 4-2.

Webb and Trey Stewart each had a pair of hits for Shepherd.


Shepherd sweeps W. Liberty

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University used the home run ball to forge a doubleheader sweep of West Liberty in the West Virginia Conference.

Shepherd (13-15, 5-3) opened with a 5-2 victory as Rae Johnson and Jodie Sites each belted a home run.

In a 13-6 nightcap triumph, Amanda Orkoskey had a pair of hits and cracked a grand slam to highlight a seven-run second inning as the Rams bolted to a 10-0 lead.


Houck, Desiroth place second for Hawks

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Justin Houck and Adam Desiroth took home silver for Hagerstown Community College at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.

Houck placed second in the triple jump (13.14 meters) and Desiroth was second in the discus (44.33 meters).

Trey Jones was third in the shot put (13.92), Justin Cole was fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase (10 minutes, 14.98 seconds), Mike Podlesnik was fourth in the 800 (1:57.03), Lindsey Hollenshead was fifth in the 1,500 (5:14.11), Jordan Atha was sixth in the 800 (2:26.26), Cassandra Lariano was eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.05) and Leslie Ferguson was eighth in the 100 (13.30).


Abbamonte wins 5K

FREDERICK, Md. -- Karen Abbamonte, 49, of Boonsboro was the overall women's champion at the Frederick Community College Cougar 5K.

Abbamonte, who competes for Hagerstown's Cumberland Valley Athletic Club, covered the 3.1-mile course in 22:00.

Senior softball practice

The Washington County Senior Softball League will hold practice and registration on April 14, 15, 17, 21, 22 and 24 at the Hagerstown City Park softball fields.

The sessions will start at 5:30 p.m. and are open to anyone age 50 and over.

Registration closes April 24 and league play starts May 5.
