Chambersburg fire cause under investigation

April 05, 2008

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The cause of a fire Wednesday night that displaced about a half-dozen people from a house at 235 S. Fourth St. was being investigated, Chambersburg Deputy Fire Chief Paul Benchoff said.

The fire in a second-floor bedroom was called in at about 7 p.m. and quickly was brought under control, Benchoff said. Fire damage was limited to the bedroom, but firefighters were tossing and shoveling charred debris from the broken windows.

The fire appeared to have started on a bed, but the cause was not immediately known, Benchoff said. At least some residents of the house did not speak English, making the task of determining what happened more difficult, he said.

Borough firefighters were joined by units from the Franklin and New Franklin fire companies, the Letterkenny Fire Department and the Franklin County Emergency Air Unit.
