Mercersburg library receives $400,000 gift

April 04, 2008

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The Mercersburg Library Association's Board of Directors recently announced the receipt of $400,000 to the Fendrick Library Building Fund, helping the board get closer to its funding goal for an addition to the library.

The gift is in memory of Thomas B. Steiger Sr. and was made by Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Gerry Lenfest, a graduate of Mercersburg Academy.

According to a news release, the Fendrick Library Building Fund started in January 2003 when an initial gift of $120,000 was received from the Mercersburg Development Association. Through gifts from members of the community and various fundraising efforts, another $190,000 has been raised toward the goal of $750,000. The receipt of the Lenfest gift has brought the building fund much closer to attaining this goal.

The board has begun the planning for the new addition to the library at 20 N. Main St. An architectural firm, Tippetts, Weaver Architects of Lancaster, Pa., has been hired and Rockwell Construction Co. of Mercersburg has been selected as the general contractor for the project.

The board hopes that groundbreaking for the addition can take place later this year.

The new addition will house a children's section, a new area for stacks and an elevator to make the second floor accessible for all patrons. Plans call for renovations and additions to the original building to include restrooms, a public computer area, a new front desk and a larger librarian's office.

The board plans to continue its fundraising efforts, according to the release. In addition, an increase to the library's endowment is required to help maintain the new larger building, the release states.
