Mail Call

"I was just reading about one woman's protest for open enrollment at Rockland Woods Elementary School. I find it sad that she thinks only her children and the 'people like her' deserve a quality education. I feel that the public schools do provide a quality education - at all locations. I have worked in the Washington County Public Schools, and the teachers work unbelievably hard to give the students a great education. For this woman to feel that other children in the county aren't as 'deserving' as hers is just a downright disgrace. And by the way, my 3-year-old knows his alphabet, can count to 30, knows his shapes and colors, can read a few words, and can add. Is that enough knowledge to be in the same class as her children?" - Hagerstown

"To the person in Hagerstown responding to the Maugansville relative of a police officer. This police officer more than likely also lives in Washington County and also pays taxes, therefore where is the problem with police presence on or off-duty in a cruiser? The officer still has to respond to calls or stop to help a motorist off duty, therefore we get an extra officer on the scene faster, which makes it safer for the public and his co-workers."

"I am always hearing how much the war is costing taxpayers. Why am I never hearing how much money is spent on earmarks, how much is spent on Social Security and Medicare, how much is spent on other programs? Seems to me the press is always looking for ways to get the people against the war."

"I live down here on Park Hall Road, below Boonsboro. I got a letter the other week, they are going to spray this mountain for gypsy moths. I sure am glad. I read an article in the paper today about the gypsy moths. They sure did a bad job on the mountain last year. People in the southern part are worried about a tower being built. They better start worrying about the mountain - I do." - Boonsboro

"This is about that tower on Keep Tryst Road in South County. I find it very suspicious that officials would restrict public comment. It looks like they're hiding something. They haven't proposed any alternatives. I think it needs to be investigated. Something's fishy when there's no alternative and no public input."

"Who cares if the truckers go on strike? Long-distance trucking is on its way out. You might not think so, but the railroads have been making a big comeback the last five years, and they're hiring tens of thousands of people. And what's nice about it is they haul freight at least 10 times more efficiently - much less fuel used to go the same distance. We'll still have trucks, but they'll be medium-sized trucks for local deliveries. So that'll be an ugly era in America, of all this pollution and carnage on the highway, it'll be gone." - Hagerstown suburb

"I've been driving 'Death Curve' for four years straight, and I've lived here for 30 years, and there's nothing wrong with the 'Death Curve' road. It's the drivers. If they stayed off their phone and watched their speed, they'd be just fine. I've got many S curves out here where I live, and they're not nearly as bad as 'Death Curve,' so there's nothing wrong with the curve. Let's watch the drivers."

"I travel Northern Avenue every day at 2:30, to pick up a child at Northern Middle, and if something soon isn't done about the speeding cars on that street at that time of the day, someone is really going to be hurt. Yesterday as I went, I saw a policeman following a car that was speeding above the 25-mile speed limit. I could not believe what I saw. The police have got to come out here and police this street, or something terrible is going to happen." - Hagerstown

"If Congress was really concerned about the high oil prices and high gas prices, here are a few things they could do. They could repeal the federal tax on gas. They could sell their short-term oil futures and buy long, which would put a lot of oil back on the market. They could do away with some EPA standards."

"The Washington County Commissioners need to start telling HCC and the BOE they need to start living within their budgets, and stop asking for increases. Taxpayers in this county have to live within their means; so should they. In fact, maybe they should start looking for ways to cut their budget, like everyone has to do." - Sharpsburg

"It's nice to see yesterday a photo of a government worker planting trees, but how about a parallel picture of the tree destruction that goes along Eastern Boulevard and other areas in the city of Hagerstown. Tree City? Ha." - Hagerstown

"Three of the stupidest decisions that have been made in the last couple years in this area are: Number one, building the hospital at Robinwood instead of Allegheny Power land; number two, buying all the buildings downtown, when we are strapped for money to begin with; and number three, the bridge." - Washington County
