Shepherd University to kick off its Designated Driver Program

April 02, 2008

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University will kick off its Designated Driver Program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday in the Student Center's Ram's Den.

The program aims to encourage responsible drinking behavior and reduce injury or death of students under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs by implementing a campus and communitywide safe ride home program.

Establishments that serve alcohol are being asked to provide a free nonalcoholic drink to students wearing the designated driver silicone bracelet and presenting a valid Shepherd University ID card. Designated drivers are individuals who care about their friends and family, and agree to provide a safe ride home for all members of their group. They also agree to stay sober, not taking one sip of alcohol when others are drinking.

Students are encouraged to wear a blue wristband that reads "designated driver" as a way to show friends that they are the designated driver for the night. In addition, the wristband can be worn to show that an individual is abstaining from alcohol and drugs.
