Bethany Garnand fired a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead Smithsburg to a 4-0 win over North Hagerstown on Monday.

"I think everybody was ready," Garnand said. "I knew they were behind me. I was happy with my ball movement and my changeup was working well."

Garnand retired 11 of the last 14 batters that she faced. Garnand had to make 135 pitches to get her complete game.

"Bethany Garnand pitched an awesome game," Smithsburg coach Brian Getz said. "It helps when a pitcher has 15 strikeouts. Bethany was on with her pitching and the defense played well."

The bottom third of Smithsburg's lineup collected all five of its hits. Dani Hudson, the Leopards' No. 8 hitter, had three of those hits.

The Leopards also took advantage of 12 walks.

Smithsburg (3-2) scored its first run in the top of the second inning. Danielle Beaver led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on an infield error.

In the fourth, Jessica Hartman walked, moved to second on a fielder's choice and scored when T'Bony Jewell and Garnand drew back-to-back walks.

Smithsburg scored its final two runs in the fifth. Hudson started a two-out rally with a single to left and Kaitlyn Miller and Hartman walked to load the bases. Hudson scored on a wild pitch before Bolton and Jewell drew consecutive walks that forced Miller home with a run.

The Hubs fall to 3-2.
