Hagerstown church to host workshop on child abuse, neglect

The 20th annual workshop on Child Abuse and Neglect will be Tuesday, April 29, from 7:30 am to 3:30 p.m. at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 515 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Workshops covering a variety of topics concerning child abuse prevention will be held. They include sessions on addictions, trauma informed care, enhancing communication, bullying and gangs.

Department of Human Resources Secretary Brenda Donald will be the keynote speaker. She has more than 25 years of senior management experience in both the public and nonprofit sectors.

Washington County has the fourth highest "indicated" abuse rate in the state, according to a prepared release. The Washington County Department of Social Services staff investigated 1,600 reports of abuse or neglect in 2007 and assessed the risk of maltreatment for more than 4,000 children, the release says.

The fee for the conference is $50 and includes continental breakfast and lunch.
