McClanathan of Troop 62 in Chewsville earns Eagle Scout rank

Troop 62, Chewsville, honored James McClanathan with the highest award in Scouting - the Eagle Scout on Feb. 23 at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.

James is the son of Terry and Joyce McClanathan.

The members of Troop 62 conducted the opening ceremony.

Scoutmaster Ed Marfut presented the Eagle badge and administered the Eagle Oath. James then presented his mother with a miniature Eagle pin and his father with an Eagle tie tack. James also presented a mentor pin to Rodney Purdham for his assistance, encouragement and support.

State Sen. Don Munson presented a State Resolution. Del. Chris Shank presented a House Resolution. Jerry Cump from Hagerstown Elks Lodge 378 presented the Americanism Award. The Elks Lodge provides the Eagle kit for every Eagle Scout in Washington County.

U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett presented Congressional Recognition along with a U.S. flag, which flew over the Capitol building.

Washington County District Executive Scott Paddack read a letter of congratulations from Scout Executive Don Shepherd. Troop 62 presented a plaque with the Eagle badge and certificate.

James began scouting in 1999 as a Tiger Scout with Pack 108, Leitersburg. He earned all of the ranks, including the Arrow of Light - the highest award in Cub Scouts. In 2002, he joined Troop 62.

James has attended summer camps at Sinoquipe Scout Reservation and has served in the following leadership positions: Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Chaplains Aide and Senior Patrol Leader and has earned 31 merit badges

James's Eagle project was to organize and oversee the improvements of the walking trail used by the residents of San Mar Children's Home in Boonsboro. He corrected two major drainage problems along the pathway and planted many trees and bushes to make the pathway attractive for the participants. The project was completed with the help of Troop 62 Scouts and Leaders.

James is a junior at Smithsburg High School. He is a member of St.Andrew's United Methodist Church and co-director of the church's bell choir.

He is also on the Smithsburg High School distinguished honor roll, a memberof the National Honor Society, school concert and marching bands and throws shot put for the track team. He also played youth soccer for many years.

James plans to attend a four-year college and major in engineering.

The Rev. Mike Henning of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church gave the invocation and benediction.

Troop 62 is sponsored by the Chewsville Lions Club and meets at the Chewsville Community Center.
