HAGERSTOWN -- Rescue crews used the jaws of life Monday afternoon to remove a woman from an overturned SUV on Winter Street, Hagerstown Police said.

Sara St. Clair, 69, of Hagerstown, was driving south on Winter Street at about 4:30 p.m. when a Dodge Ram truck ran a red light on Washington Avenue and collided with her Hyundai Santa Fe, Hagerstown Police Officer Langley Dean said.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, Shane Morrow, 23, of Boonsboro, said he pushed the brake pedal but couldn't stop, Dean said. Police were investigating whether the truck had a mechanical failure, Dean said.

The woman had no visible injuries, but she was removed on a stretcher as a precaution and taken to Washington County Hospital by ambulance, according to Community Rescue Service Capt. Jeremy Mackrell.

She was released later in the day, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Hagerstown Police Officer Stephen Magaha said the driver was lucky to have escaped without major injury.

"The accident looked worse than it actually was," Magaha said.
