The 2008 Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County will be Sunday, April 6, at Turner's Dual Lanes in Hagerstown. The event will begin at 11 a.m. with the last teams finishing at 5 p.m.

Money raised in the event help fund the agency's services to children in the program, as well as recruiting efforts to find mentors for children waiting to be matched with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Big Couples.

Last year, 258 children received service from the program. There are 59 children waiting to be matched with a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches adult mentors with children growing up in primarily single-parent families who need the friendship and guidance of an adult in the Community-Based Mentoring program and/or the School-Based Mentoring program.

Last year's Bowl For Kids' Sake raised $44,500. This year's goal is $50,000. Eighty-seven teams participated in the 2007 Bowl for Kids' Sake in Washington County. A team may range from one to six bowlers.

Big Brothers Big Sisters encourages businesses, schools, clubs and organizations to form teams and challenge other teams to recruit the most bowlers or raise the most money.

Regardless of a person's bowling ability, everyone is eligible to participate in the event. Each participant will bowl one game of either duckpins or tenpins and bowling and shoes are free. Bowlers obtain a flat pledge - a set amount of money regardless of the total bowled - or a pledged amount for each pin knocked down. The minimum score is 100, regardless of the game bowled, and the minimum pledge required is $25. Friends, family members and local businesses can sponsor the bowling efforts. All participants are eligible for door prizes and other prizes. Disc Jockeys from D.V.K. Entertainment Inc. will serve as emcees throughout the six-hour event.

Corporate Sponsors for this year's event are Bon-Ton, DOT Foods and Hagemeyer.

Business sponsors are Allegany Dental Care, Callas Contractors, Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, First Data, Hagerstown Trust, Martin's Fine Furniture, Martin's Food Market, McDonald's, Michael G. Day & Associates, Paul Crampton Contractors, Spire Investment Partners, Traditions At The White Swan and Volvo-Powertrain. Prospective bowlers should register teams and secure pledge sheets from Big Brothers Big Sisters in advance.

Sponsor sheets may also be picked up at Turner's Dual Lanes and Long Meadow Bowl. To schedule a lane, all teams need to call Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County at 301-739-4711 or stop by the office at 1135 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown.
