Mail Call

"Mr. Editor: Please explain why The Herald-Mail continues to perpetuate the myth that Washington County has senior centers, by publishing 'Senior center activities for next week?' Further, it does not even include activities at all the sites in the county. In fact, these activities take place at the Commission on Aging's senior nutrition sites around the city and county. And while the site managers provide a few hours of socialization and educational activities, there is no such thing as comprehensive activity programming, as would be provided at a larger senior center designed for all the county's seniors, as has been requested to the County Commissioners." - Williamsport

"OK, commissioners, let's have another thought for your millions of dollars you've got to spend ... If you want all those offices in one place, why don't you put them out at the old Allegheny Power building? You could have everything there - plenty of parking, plenty of space, and a lot less taxes for us to keep paying for."

"I'm calling to thank Tim Rowland for his excellent column on our County Commissioners' boondoggle with the buildings downtown. Just in case they need a little help, I know where there's two other nice pieces of property they can buy: The old power plant, and that great elephant sitting across the street. Where is John Munson?" - Hagerstown

"I love Mail Call, especially when people are talking about traffic violations and whatnot. One thing I have noticed, there's been a lot of talk about the handicapped spaces being abused. I'll be the first one to stand in line and defend someone who needs a handicapped space, with the handicapped tags. I do have a problem, though, with these people with handicapped license plates. ... I think what the problem is is that the person driving is not handicapped but the person who they are transporting is." - Hagerstown

"I read the article of the 90-year-old man who does not qualify for a trip to D.C. for veterans, because he's 100 yards out of town. Come on, people, does Uncle Sam care where you live when they take you? I don't think so. Where would the city employee or anyone else, as far as that goes, be if it wouldn't be for our veterans? Let's go, people. Write in to the state representative or town." - Greencastle, Pa.

"One of the main problems with the present trio of Berkeley County Commissioners is that they are RINOs (Republican in Name Only) and have deviated grossly from the principles of low taxation and frugality in spending." - Martinsburg, W.Va.

"Caller who is sick because G.W. Bush was dancing on White House steps and eight military were killed, I can relate to that. When Clinton did nothing while we lost 17 sailors at once, an attempt on the World Trade Center in '92, the list goes on." - Washington County

"I think the U.S. should boycott the Olympics in China this year. Their human rights thing is atrocious." - Hagerstown
