Roxbury Correctional Institution to stay locked down

March 08, 2008

Roxbury Correctional Institution will remain locked down after seven inmates assaulted several correctional officers Thursday afternoon, Maryland Division of Corrections spokesman Mark Vernarelli said Friday.

Roxbury Correctional Institution spokeswoman Denise Gelsinger told The Associated Press that the lockdown will continue until March 17.

Vernarelli said an inmate tried to break away from a guard Thursday as the inmate was being led back to his cell after lunch. During the assault, three other inmates jumped in to aid the escape, Vernarelli said.

Order was restored quickly, and no serious injuries were reported, Vernarelli said.

He said the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit has assigned a team of detectives to look into assault.

"Violence against the officers cannot be tolerated, and IIU will work aggressively with the State's Attorney's Office to pursue criminal charges," Vernarelli wrote in an e-mail.

Vernarelli said of the lockdown, "The rest of the inmates will have to suffer for the actions of a few."
