Troop 62's Brown earns Eagle Scout rank

Troop 62, Chewsville, honored Alexander Larson Brown with the highest award in Scouting - the Eagle Scout rank on Feb. 2 at Smithsburg Trinity Lutheran Church.

Alex is the son of Kelli and Martin Brown.

The Court of Honor was called to order by Scoutmaster Ed Marfut and Senior Patrol Leader James McClanathan. The Candle Lighting Ceremony was conducted by Dave Biser, Steven Purdham and Brendan Kloos.

Unit Commissioner Rob Storer read the significance of the Eagle. Assistant Scoutmaster Rodney Purdham read the "Voice of the Eagle," Connor Brown, Alex's brother, read the "Trail to Eagle," and his younger brother, Harrison, assisted with the opening ceremony.

Ed Marfut gave the Eagle Charge and Assistant Scoutmaster Josiah Storer administered the Eagle Pledge. Ed Marfut and Rob Storer presented the Eagle badge to Alex and he in turn presented his mother with a miniature Eagle pin and his father with an Eagle tie tack.

Alex presented a mentor pin to his grandmother, Gladys Brown, in memory of his grandfather, Don Brown, who passed away Jan. 31. Alex reflected on the many activities he shared with his grandfather and of the constant support he received from Don Brown. Alex is also the grandson of Tempe and Robert Gearinger.

State Sen. Don Munson presented a State Resolution and a House Resolution and a Maryland paperweight. Jerry Cump from Hagerstown Elks Lodge 378 presented the Americanism Award. The Elks Lodge provides the Eagle kit for every Eagle Scout in Washington County. U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett presented a Congressional Recognition along with a U.S. flag which flew over the Capital building.

Smithsburg Mayor Micky Myers presented a Certification of Accomplishment. District Executive Scott Paddack read the congratulation letter from Boy Scouts National in Irving, Texas.

Alex received many letters of congratulations including President and Mrs. Bush, former Presidents Bush, Carter and Clinton. He also, received a Governor's Citation and certification of accomplishment from the Washington County Commissioners. Troop 62 presented Alex with an Eagle plaque.

Alex's Eagle project involved clean up and landscaping of the backyard of the Parish Hall of Smithsburg Trinity Lutheran Church. Alex was assisted by family, friends and members of Troop 62 in the completion of the project.

Alex began Scouting as a Cub Scout in Pack 14, Smithsburg. He earned all of the ranks, including the highest award in Cub Scouts - the Arrow of Light. He also earned many belt loops and pins. He joined Troop 62 in February 2004. He has earned 35 merit badges, completed more than 200 service hours, and completed a 135-mile bike hike on the C&O Canal.

Alex has served in the following leadership positions: patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, patrol scribe and troop historian. He has served as Den Chief for Pack 14 and is a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Alex is a freshman at Smithsburg High School and is a member of Smithsburg Trinity Lutheran Church.

The invocation and benediction were given by Pastor Gerry Johnson.

Troop 62 is sponsored by the Chewsville Lions Club and meets at the Chewsville Community Center.
