WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Katie Warehime scored a layup on a feed from Laura Harkins with 3:22 remaining in the game to lift Shepherd University to a 48-47 win over Wheeling Jesuit in quarterfinal action of the WVIAC Women's Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center on Wednesday.

Warehime scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Krissy Grosselin added 10 points, while Harkins had eight points, six boards, five blocks, and two assists.

Wheeling Jesuit took advantage of a dismal first half shooting performance (10 of 32) by the Rams en route to a 24-20 halftime lead. Shayla Holenka poured in 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half for Wheeling.

The second half featured three ties and just one lead change. The Rams took their first lead of the second half on Warehime's game-winning layup. The Shepherd defense stood strong to seal the win as both teams were scoreless over the last 3:22.

Both teams shot 34.5 percent from the floor for the game. Shepherd held a 40-35 rebounding advantage.

"It was definitely not the prettiest game," said Shepherd head coach Jodie Runner. "We were having trouble scoring and our defense came up huge. I think it is fitting that with all our struggles here in the past, we get a one-point win."

Lindsay Stuckey added 10 points, while Bridget Buskirk dished out a game-high seven assists for Wheeling (11-18). Kim Mueller added a team-high seven rebounds.

Shepherd (22-5) will face West Virginia Wesleyan, a 65-53 winner over Concord, in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m.
