Fire destroys house in Berkeley County

February 26, 2008|By DAVE McMILLION

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Fire raced through a one-story home Monday in the Douglas Grove estates development along Douglas Grove Road in Berkeley County, a fire official said.

Lt. Willie Whitmer of the Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department declined to comment on a possible cause of the fire, which was reported around noon.

Whitmer said a woman who is hearing impaired was at the home when the fire started but had trouble communicating with a 911 dispatcher, Whitmer said.

A Berkeley County Sheriff's Department officer responded to the scene and called for help, Whitmer said.

The fire destroyed most of the home, leaving the garage as about the only salvageable part, Whitmer said.

The woman, her husband and a stepson lived in the house, Whitmer said.

The Red Cross provided housing for the family and the fire department will purchase some clothes for the family, Whitmer said.
