February 24, 2008

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A situation that began when shots were fired in a McConnellsburg home Saturday escalated when the suspect attempted to flee, dragging a Pennsylvania State Police constable alongside his vehicle, a state police press release says.

Jonathan Edgar Berkstresser, 26, of McConnellsburg was later apprehended without incident, police said.

Berkstresser was charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another and assault; and one count each of discharging a firearm in a home and resisting arrest, police said.

The incident was reported at 6:12 a.m., when state police responded to the 400 block of Lincoln Way East for a report of shots fired at a residence, police said. Berkstresser left the residence before officers arrived, police said.

State police Constable Larry Franco, who knows Berkstresser, contacted him via telephone, and Berkstresser agreed to return to the residence, police said.

Berkstresser spotted a Pennsylvania State Police trooper as Franco was trying to get him out of his vehicle, police said.

Franco, who had grabbed Berkstresser by his arm, was dragged 20 feet and struck by the vehicle, police said. He suffered minor injuries.

Berkstresser was being held at the Franklin County Jail on $500,000 bond.
