Indians' Reed tries to become toast of 189-pound class

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Berkeley Springs' Cody Reed and Liberty Raleigh's Nick Hylton are both reigning West Virginia Class AA-A state champions and undefeated this season.

That will change tonight when they meet in the state final at 189 pounds at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

Reed (39-0), who won at 189 last year, pinned Tyler's Cullen Grover in 32 seconds in the semifinals Friday night for his third first-period pin of the tournament. Hylton (49-0), who won at 171 last year, hasn't lost in two years.

Three other area wrestlers reached the championship finals - Berkeley Springs' Bradley Reed (119) in Class AA-A and Jefferson's Dylan Nick (171) and Musselman's Jared Weatherholtz (189) in Class AAA.

In the semifinals, Reed edged Point Pleasant's Phillip Allen 5-4, Nick beat Wheeling Park's Danny Doyle 6-3 and Weatherholtz pinned Ripley's Colby McCutcheon in 21 seconds.

In tonight's finals, Reed will face Roane County's Joey Maldonado, Nick will take on Huntington's Luke Canterbury and Weatherholtz will meet Parkersburg's Andy Thomas.

Four area wrestlers will compete in the consolation semifinals today and are guaranteed no worse than sixth place. They are Berkeley Springs' Derek Hovermale (112), Josh Connor (125) and Jake Stotler (285) in Class AA-A and Musselman's Luke Dawson (145) in Class AAA.
