Snow Emergency Plan lifted

The snow emergency plans for Washington and Frederick counties were lifted at 12:30 p.m. today, Maryland State Police announced.

Conditions on designated snow emergency routes had greatly improved and most major routes are clear, police said. However, other roads might still be snow- and ice-covered and drivers are urged to use caution, especially on exit ramps, intersections and bridges.

Schools closed

Public and private elementary and secondary schools in Washington and Frederick counties in Maryland, Franklin and Fulton counties in Pennsylvania and Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties in West Virginia were closed today because of a winter storm.

Classes were also canceled at Hagerstown Community College, the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown, Frederick Community College, Frostburg State University, Hood College, Mountain State University, Penn State-Mont Alto, Shepherd University, Shippensburg University and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College.


Postponements, cancellations

· City governments in Hagerstown and Frederick, Md., are open today, with liberal leave policy in effect.

· Fulton County government is closed today.

· The Washington County Commission on Aging is closed today.

· The Washington County Public High School artist reception for the exhibit, Momentum: Emerging Artists Moving Forward in Visual Arts, has been postponed until Friday, March 7. It will be held in the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown Library from 6 to 8 p.m.

· The Trenessa Karen book signing at the Memorial Recreation Center in Hagerstown, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed and will be rescheduled.

· Brain Games XI, originally scheduled for Sunday at the Shepherd University Student Center, has been postponed until Sunday, March 2. Registration begins at noon, with competition from 1 to 5 p.m.

· All events at Hagerstown Speedway this weekend have been canceled.

· A spaghetti fundraiser at Boonsboro's First Hose Company scheduled for Sunday has been postponed and will be rescheduled.

· Tonight's Rescue Hose Co. Minstrels performance at Quincy (Pa.) Nursing Home is canceled.

· The G.R.E., Part 1 concert, scheduled for Saturday at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown, has been canceled.
