HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The 61st annual West Virginia state tournament began Thursday night with 32 area wrestlers in first-round bouts at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

Action continues today and concludes Saturday with the championship finals at 6 p.m.

No. 1 Greencastle 58, Daniel Boone 53

NEW KINGSTOWN, Pa. - Greencastle-Antrim will head into the PIAA Class AAA state tournament on a positive note following a victory over Daniel Boone which gave the Blue Devils third place in the District 3 tournament.

The Blue Devils (24-5) will open state play on Feb. 29. Opponent, site and time are TBA.

Jordan Gembe led Greencastle with 16 points and Dameatric Scott added 15 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Greencastle trailed 18-14 after the first period but took a 28-27 halftime lead and then held off the Blazers (23-8) in the second half.

No. 5 Williamsport 63, South 62

Greg Minnick had 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead Williamsport as the Wildcats held on to beat South Hagerstown despite the Rebels' two shot attempts in the final seconds.

Eric Wilfong added 11 points and five assists and A.J. Jamison had six assists for the Wildcats (17-3).

Steve Burnett led the Rebels (8-13) with 15 points, while Alvin Roberson added 13 and Shane Santell and Chris Jackson added 10 apiece.

St. James 64, Georgetown Day 54

SAINT JAMES - Mike Russ had 23 points and 12 rebounds to help St. James beat Georgetown Day (6-13) in the quarterfinals of the Mid Atlantic Conference tournament.

Ben Farquhar had 17 points and seven rebounds, T.K. Washington had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Spencer Draper had seven assists for the Saints (16-9).

St. James will face host Flint Hill tonight at 6:45.

Malvern 54, Mercersburg 48

MALVERN, Pa. - Brett Burrier and Ajaye Dean scored 18 points apiece for Mercersburg Academy in a loss to Malvern Prep on Wednesday.

Hancock 60, Bishop Walsh 45

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Steven Beaver had 21 points and five steals and Josh Unger had 14 points and seven steals to lead Hancock (7-14) over Bishop Walsh (10-15).

Heritage 56, Shalom 24

Hamilton Stamper had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Heritage Academy over Shalom Christian in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference semifinals.

Andrew Hendershot had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Eagles (21-2).

Matt Horner had six points for Shalom (14-10).

Heritage will face Cumberland Valley Christian School in the final on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Maria Goretti.

Goretti 55, Middletown 49

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - John Duhring scored 18 points to lead St. Maria Goretti over Middletown (15-7).
