Student taken to hospital after bus accident in W.Va.

February 21, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Tomahawk Intermediate School student was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg on Wednesday after the bus he was riding home was struck by a white GMC truck near the northern Berkeley County, W.Va., community of Allensville, school and emergency officials said.

The fourth-grader was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons after the accident happened about 4:45 p.m. and Berkeley County Schools Director of Communications Jaimee Borger did not believe the student received serious injuries.

The driver of the GMC left the scene of the accident near the intersection of Beards Crossing Road and Saddlebred Drive before West Virginia State Police arrived, Borger said.

Police are now looking for the driver, Borger said.

Borger said she believed the fourth-grader was the only student on the bus at the time of the accident, which was attributed in part to inclement weather.
