Titans get final Talley over Gaels

February 20, 2008|By JACK HILL III

Backup center Arthur Talley hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left in the game to lift Tuscarora to a 51-50 victory over St. Maria Goretti at the Gael Center on Tuesday.

The Gaels (11-18) led 50-49 with time winding down when Tuscarora point guard Luis Cotto fired a long pass to Talley underneath the basket. Talley went up with his shot but was fouled on the play.

"This is only Arthur Talley's fifth game up from the JV team," Tuscarora coach Dan Wagner said. "He made those two clutch foul shots at the end. It was a tough spot for a 10th-grader to be in."

The Gaels had one last chance to win the game. Kevin Breslin dribbled downcourt and looked to be driving to the basket. Instead, he dumped the ball to John Duhring in the lane. The pass was short, however, and Duhring was trying to pick the ball up off of the floor as time ran out.

Antoine Smith had 22 points and LaQuan Randolph added 10 for Tuscarora (13-7). Cotto contributed six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Goretti's four senior starters did the bulk of the scoring for the Gaels on Senior Night. Breslin collected 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Mitch Belella and Duhring scored 10 points each and Matisse Gaillard added seven. Gaillard added four assists and Belella had three.

"We missed opportunities and we had too many turnovers down the stretch," Goretti coach Cokey Robertson said. "We had several big defensive breakdowns down the stretch. I was impressed by Tuscarora's toughness. They have a good attitude. They attacked the basket. We just self-destructed at the end."
