FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. -- Merle L. Brookens, 81, of Mount Pleasant Road, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at his home. 

Born Sept. 10, 1926, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late George M. and Mary M. Shields Brookens.

He was a truck driver most of his life.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded a Purple Heart on March 18, 1945. 

He was a member of Hume McNeil Byers AMVETS Post 224.

He is survived by his wife of more than 63 years, Jane D. Myers; one son, Merle L. Brookens Jr. of Metamora, Mich.; one sister, Arlene Gelwicks of Fayetteville; one brother, Sterling Brookens of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Terry L. Brookens, and one infant brother, Max.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, where members of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors.  

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. 




Shirley M. Hawbaker, 64

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Shirley M. Hawbaker, 64, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at the home of her daughter at 10344 Kasiesville Road, Mercersburg.

Born Dec. 29, 1943, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William L. and Ethel Meck Duvall.

Her husband, Lewis J. "Junior" Hawbaker, died July 7, 2003.

She was last employed as a care provider by Lutheran Home Care of Chambersburg.

She is survived by one daughter, Tammy G. Eyer of Mercersburg; three sisters, Betty Sword of St. Thomas, Pa., Patricia Bennett of Mercersburg and Helen Ross of Dallas; five grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. The Rev. Paul A. Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run (Pa.) Brethren Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the funeral home.




Martha L. Rockwell, 77



FEB. 22, 1930-FEB. 16, 2008

FORT LOUDON, Pa. -- Martha L. Rockwell, 77, formerly of Main Street, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Falling Spring Nursing Center, Chambersburg, Pa. 

Born Feb. 22, 1930, in Conway, Ark., she was a daughter of the late Johnnie S. and Dessie Kelly Green.

Her husband, William R. Rockwell Sr., died April 18, 2000.

She was last employed by Knouse Food of Chambersburg.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mercersburg, Pa. 

She was a member of VFW Post 6241 Ladies Auxiliary of Mercersburg. 

She is survived by five daughters, Donna J. Pine of St. Thomas, Pa., Evelyn L. Doyle of Camp Hill, Pa., Melinda J. Rockwell of Shippensburg, Pa., Verna M. Nunemaker of McConnellsburg, Pa., and Diana F. Conner of Chambersburg; two sons, William R. Rockwell Jr. of Chambersburg and Michael E. Rockwell of Greencastle, Pa.; one sister, Jennie Zimmerman of Little Rock, Ark.; one brother, Troy Green of Little Rock; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. Pastor George W. Jones Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles Tracy, 81



MARCH 5, 1926-FEB. 17, 2008

GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Charles "Pappy" Tracy, 81 of South Carlisle Street, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at the home of his daughter on Rustic Tavern Road, Hedgesville, W.Va.

Born March 5, 1926, in Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Charles Orville and Alta Mae Misner Tracy.

His wife, Evelyn "Evie" Elizabeth Etter Tracy, died Feb. 22, 2005. They were married July 1, 1948.

He retired in 1989 from Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Pa., after more than 40 years of employment.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle and most recently attended Hedgesville Baptist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Judy A. Tracy Godwin of Hedgesville; one sister, Jane Wetzel of Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Sarah E. Godwin of Hedgesville; and several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty McIntyre, and two brothers, Robert Tracy and William Tracy.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle. Pastor Scott Sheets will officiate. Burial will be in Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, Pa.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
