Pa. man dies after jumping off overpass

February 14, 2008

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A Montgomery County, Pa., man died Wednesday morning when he jumped from an overpass in Antrim Township and was struck by one or more vehicles on Interstate 81, Franklin County Deputy Coroner Kenneth L. Peiffer said.

Peiffer ruled the death of the 40-year-old Royersford, Pa., man a suicide. Information from a friend of the dead man led investigators to conclude that he took his own life, Peiffer said.

The man apparently jumped from the Hykes Road overpass at about 3:45 a.m. onto one of the southbound lanes of the interstate, Peiffer said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Peiffer said.

The cause of death was multiple trauma and no autopsy will be performed, Peiffer said.

A motorist made the 911 call to Pennsylvania State Police, Peiffer said. The man's vehicle later was found along U.S. 11 in the State Line, Pa., area, he said.

Southbound traffic on the interstate was closed to one lane while police and the Coroner's Office investigated, Peiffer said.
