WILLIAMSPORT -- Retired correctional officer captain Donnie Stotelmyer of Halfway was confirmed Monday by the Williamsport Town Council as the town's new clerk/treasurer.
Mayor James G. McCleaf II said he selected Stotelmyer from about 70 applicants for the position, which has been vacant since James R. Castle resigned at the end of November to take a job in Brunswick, Md.
"Don brings a lot of talent to this position," McCleaf said Monday. "As always, we're going to keep him busy."
Council member Jeff Cline, who called for greater council input into the hiring process, abstained from the vote on Stotelmyer's confirmation. However, he said Stotelmyer has his full respect and support.
Stotelmyer, 51, who grew up in Hagerstown, retired Feb. 1 after a 27-year career with the Maryland Correctional Institution. He has chaired the property and finance committee at the Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown, where he was a member of the executive committee. He also has sat in on state budget meetings in Annapolis with MCI officials, he said.
