HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. --Four people traveling in a van were killed early Wednesday after the vehicle they were riding in apparently collided with a tractor-trailer on U.S. 340 near Jefferson County's boundary with Virginia, according to a county medical examiner.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Department deputy Sgt. R.S. Sell and medical examiner Donald Shirley were investigating the accident, officials said.

Harpers Ferry Police Department assisted with the investigation. The crash was reported at 6:41 a.m.

In Frederick County, Md., northbound U.S. 15 at Fish Hatchery Road was closed after a tractor-trailer carrying chemicals collided with another vehicle and overturned, Maryland State Police said in a news release. The tractor-trailer overturned, and there was the potential for chemical leaks.

Frederick County Fire Department Hazardous Material units, the Maryland Department of the Environment and troopers from the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division were on the scene, troopers said.

Traffic was being re-routed off northbound U.S. 15 at Hessong Bridge Road and back onto U.S. 15 at Angleberger Road.
