Scout installs flagpole at C&O Canal park visitor center

February 13, 2008

WILLIAMSPORT - John Shaffer of Falling Waters, W.Va., raised the flag for the first time Feb. 9 on the newly installed flagpole at the Williamsport Visitor Center of the C&O Canal National Historical Park.

John coordinated the flagpole project to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, putting in more than 200 hours of project time to develop and implement the flagpole installation.

A student at Hedgesville (W.Va.) High School, John is a member of Troop 16 of Marlowe, W.Va., which is led by Todd Shaffer.

The visitor center opened in 1996, but has been using a temporary flagholder. As part of his project, John developed a proposal to acquire all materials, coordinated site location with National Park Service staff, developed installation plans that met compliance requirements for the park and assembled a team of fellow Scouts for the installation of the pole.

Installation began in January, when four Scouts dug the hole and poured hand-mixed cement with monitoring by National Park Service staff. The pole was installed the following week.
