Humane Society thanks TOPS 77 for helping animals at shelter

February 12, 2008

The Humane Society of Washington County would like to thank the local TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter No. 77 group that meets at First Christian Church on Potomac Avenue in Hagerstown for helping the animals at the shelter this past holiday.

Club members Barb Trumpower and Gordana Ritchie developed a program called "Toys for Our Special Friends," which raised toys and cash for the animals at the shelter.

Working closely with club leader Donna Blackowitz, Trumpower and Ritchie combined the satisfaction of weight loss with that of promoting shelter animal adoptions.

"Toys for Our Special Friends," a contest members could elect to participate in, required members to provide an animal related toy or treat at weigh-in stations during December.

The first week of the contest, members were also required to sing "Jingle Bells" in a cat or dog voice, bringing smiles and laughter to all participants. Claiming that they wanted to do something to help the animals at the shelter and make dropping those pounds even more worthwhile than before, Blackowitz, Trumpower and Ritchie achieved their goal as the pounds were shed and the toys piled up.
