HAGERSTOWN -- Seniors at Golden Living Center have been without hot water for bathing or washing dishes since the plumbing blew a gasket Saturday morning, the facility's director said Monday.

Hot water should be fully restored Tuesday, executive director William Boyer said.

The Dual Highway nursing home, formerly known as Beverly Healthcare, has been using wet wipes and no-rinse shampoos and body washes, Boyer said.

"We always have precautions in place, and I think everybody's doing well," he said. "The staff has managed it very well."

The center was able to restore hot water to its laundry facilities Saturday evening and has been able to continue washing bed linens, he said.

The center's kitchen also has limited hot water, but it has not been sufficient to sanitize dishes, so the center has been using paper products, Boyer said.

The center's heating system was not affected by the problem, he said.

The center had to order a gasket seal, which was supposed to arrive Monday, but the part had to be reordered, he said. With overnight shipping, the center was expecting the part to arrive by 10:30 a.m. today and hoped to have the hot water back on within an hour of receiving the part, Boyer said.

Golden Living Center is home to about 130 seniors, Boyer said.
