February 08, 2008|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 25-year-old Jefferson County man was expected to recover after being shot in the upper left shoulder Thursday night, according to a Jefferson County Sheriff's Department detective.

The man's name was not immediately released by Sheriff's Deputy Cpl. T. Edwards, who said the man underwent surgery at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center early Friday for what appeared to be a single gunshot wound.

The victim was somewhat confused when emergency personnel found him in a rented GMC sport-utility vehicle that crashed into a guardrail along W.Va. 45 near Winebrenner Road, Edwards said.

Investigators do not believe the shooting happened along W.Va. 45, where investigators were dispatched at 6:41 p.m., but are unsure exactly when or where the apparent altercation took place.

Edwards said the white, four-wheel drive SUV that the man was driving had been rented from Hertz and was towed from the accident scene.

Anyone with information about the incident may contact the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department at 304-728-3205, Edwards said.
