Hagerstown man charged in attempted robbery

February 08, 2008|By HEATHER KEELS

A man who allegedly tried to rob the Roy Rogers across the street from the Hagerstown Police Department Thursday night was caught by police less than a block away, Hagerstown Police Sgt. Elmer Hurd said.

Randall J. Hector, 48, of 59 Broadway in Hagerstown, was charged with attempted robbery, Hurd said.

Roy Rogers employees said a man walked in about 9:20 p.m. and demanded money, but the clerk said a key was necessary and went to the back room, where a manager already was calling police, Hurd said. When the man saw that the manager was on the phone with the police, he left, Hurd said.

Police spotted Hector, who matched the employees' description, on the corner of McPherson and West Church streets, and the employee identified him, Hurd said.

Hector was not armed and no one was injured in the incident, he said.
